Mike Phillips literally wrote the book on showcar detailing — and now he's sharing his secrets for this week's LIVE online detailing class. Mike's got a 1960 Plymouth Valiant in the Operating Room that needs to be fully prepped for an upcoming car show, and the paint is badly swirled.

Join us on Wednesday, October 25th at 1PM PT, 4PM ET & 3PM CT to watch Mike polish out the paint learn what car show judges are REALLY looking for when evaluating a vehicle.

Live Q&A to follow the demo, so stick around!

Here's the backstory on this car. It was fully restored about 15 years ago. It's one of the nicest complete restorations I've ever seen EXCEPT the paint. The paint is horrendous, which you'll see in the pictures below. Besides being full of swirls and scratches, the Baggie Test revealed a uniform layer of contamination over the entire car including all the glass and chrome trim. While I don't normally wash retore and original classics, due to the high level of contamination, I decided the best approach would be a full wet-wash followed by doing the mechanical decontamination while the car was wet using a clay detailing mitt.

I never see any write-ups for car detailing projects anywhere on the Internet, never. But here's the start of mine.

Just like a lot of cars I share, everyone that comes by the shop and looks at this car THINKS it looks great. But the deal is, you have to know how to inspect for swirls and that means using the correct light and standing in the correct place.

In the below shots, I use bright overhead sunlight and I'm standing on the passenger side of the car so that the sun overhead is shining down at the body panels and reflecting back at my eyes as well as my camera lens.

Starting with the front top driver's side fender and moving around the car. My normal routine is to capture a shot that give you context, that is, you can easily identify where on the car you're looking, and then a close-up shot.

Here are two of my recent articles on photographing swirls and also, photographing cars.

Here's a short video on how to capture swirls using overhead sunlight. This will also be a future LIVE detailing class car.

Here's the video archive on the Dr. Beasley's YouTube Channel

There's a brief few minutes, where the screen goes blank at the 45:08 time stamp. There's black screen for 1 minute and 22 seconds. At the 46:30 time stamp, we are back online.

The issue
We had a power charger hooked up to the Sony camera, but something was wrong, (my fault), and the camera was running on battery power only, not the power charger. So when the battery died the screen went blank. The good news is we have a spare battery and when we replaced it and we when back online.

We will sort out either the setting or the power charger so this won't happen again in the future.
