I'll give anyone a crips $100.00 bill if they can find any other real documentation of the term being used before 1988.

For a project,

How the Test Spot Was Born

In the early 1990s, while answering car detailing questions on the Usenet Newsgroups, I tried to help someone remove scratches from his white single-stage paint. Instead of trying his rubbing compound on one small section first, he applied it to the entire car. When he wiped it off, he'd created a much bigger problem than the one he started with.

That experience taught me an important lesson: when you're helping someone remotely—or even working on your own vehicle—you should always prove your process on one small area before committing to the entire vehicle.

That's when I started using the term Test Spot.
