The Front Side Angle Shot - Photography for the Car Detailing World by Mike Phillips

This is called the Front Side Angle Shot

Behind the scenes when I'm getting cars for classes and projects here, I'm talking with people, or messaging or e-mailing them and I always ask them to send me a side shot of the car. Not just any old picture but a shot like this,

1: Take the picture from the front of the car, at an angle so that I can see the front of the car AND the rest of the ENTIRE side of the car.

2: Entire car should be IN the picture, the front isn't cut-off, the back isn't cut-off the top and tires are not cut-off.

3: Hopefully you're able to take the picture in good lighting. Bad lighting is ether dark or worse, the car is half in the sun and half in the shade.

Because it's sometimes hard to explain to people what I'm looking for (and it's important to me to have GREAT pictures), I've created this thread so now I can simply e-mail them the link to it so when I tell someone I need a GOOD side shot they will understand what I mean.

These are examples of the front side angle shot and cars I've either detailed or cars my classes have detailed.

Here's a real-world example that shows how most people send me a picture of their car.

I sent the link to my original article on this topic to the owner of the above 1955 Ford Crown Victoria and here's the picture they sent back. This is the CORRECT way to photograph a car.

Depending upon your camera or the camera inside your smart phone, you may have to step back a few feet to capture the ENTIRE car in a single picture.

Hope that helps... I know it helps me. LOL

Thanks Mike. That’s always my problem. I seem to never get the whole car in the pic. I’ll try this after my next wash.

Ha ha... all good...

I needed some better pictures and instead of sharing the link to my original article on a different forum, I simply recreated here and then sent the person the link.

I guess I plagiarized myself. LOL

This is a great thread.

It's amazing how great pictures make it look 'easy', and poor pictures make taking great pictures look hard.
